The arrival

It is day one of The Great Escape Festival and Brighton is buzzing. I've packed far too much (as usual) and my laptop weighs heavy on my shoulder. I'm decked in video camera bags, audio equipment and the usual Mary Poppins inspired hand bag this baby fits it all. I look like a Matrix themed Christmas tree; decked to the halls with 'bells of musical journalism'. All topped off with a crumpled street map and a look of confusion.
I've been to Brighton before... but it was a day trip and I had an English boyfriend to guide me towards the ocean. This time, I'm on my lonesome... sent towards the open arms of a beachside town and the UK Music Industry event of the year. I'm practically drooling with anticipation - not only are there panels of music pro discussions ahead; there's also three days of cracking gigs to boot. First of all, there's a hotel to find. Where did I put that street map?
If you're heading to Brighton for next year's event, I recommend booking a hotel well in advance. My first booking left a message on my mobile over the weekend. A chatty guy informed my message bank that the hotel flooded over the weekend and my room was no longer available "but sorry, we keep your deposit". If they don't answer my calls today I'll name and shame them pronto.
So, a new hotel on New Steine Street it is. I walk the long way (mistake number one) and pass the Queens Hotel. According to the information I have with me, this is delegate central. We register, meet, party, network and for some, stay here. I'm starting to wish I was. The early starters have already checked in - they carry the priceless passes that will later give us access to the industry information sessions, interviews and parties. They also give speedy entry to gigs - now we're talking. Right, where did I put that street map?
